DIAC display technology is in its infancy. Our priorities are:
Where can you begin? Our development platform is for proving the concept. It is NOT intended to be a realistic implementation. We have an oversized RGB pixel measuring 0.3in square. This is size is equivalent to a VGA display measuring 16 feet by 12 feet (4.9m x 3.7m). We are using commercial DIACs rated at 28-36V and ordinary (low efficiency) 0805 surface mount LEDs. Our platform is for function; not optimization. The cell capacitor is tuned to make the circuit operate correctly. Our initial value is 1nF. We have a Xilinx development board to generate subfield timing logic and a custom driver board to create the necessary pulses.
Stable brightness weighted subfield operation has been attained. We are applying pulses of approximately 50V for driving pulses and 10V for data. The circuit is electrically small, the DIACs are very fast, and the currents have strong peaks. It operates as expected.
